Terms of Clearance: The requested revision to the information collections associated with the NPRM on hours of service of drivers is not approved at this time. To allow FMCSA to consider public comments on the NPRM and to finalize this rulemaking, OMB's approval of the existing information collections is extended one year. The preamble of the final rule will describe FMCSA's response to comments relating to minimizing the burden of the information collection and maximizing its practical utility as well as accurately estimating the burden reduction resulting from various provisions of the regulation.

Abstract: Motor carriers must require drivers to prepare paper records of the driver's duty status, use automatic on-board recording devices, or for certain drivers used within a 100 air-mile radius of the normal work reporting location, the motor carrier may use time cards/sheets similar to 29 CFR 516.0 and 516.2(OMB No. 1215-0017), with the addition of one item--the time the driver is released from duty each day. These estimated hour and cost burdens would result when the HOS final rule is promulgated.
