collection request is approved under the conditions agreed to by
CNCS on 8/9/00. CNCS will remove question 69b from the survey, and
will use information gathered on how many children respondents have
only in the context of how that impacts their participation in
volunteering/community service. The stated purpose of the study is
to determine the effects of service in Americorps and NCCC on
respondents' future volunteering efforts and civic responsibility.
CNCS cannot draw conclusions about the effects of its programs on
former members' decisions regarding childbirth based on the
extremely limited information gathered by this survey.

Fostering citizenship and development
of those who participate in National Service is a central purpose
of the mission of the Corporation for National and Community
Service. Phase One baseline data collection, already approved by
OMB, was completed in March 2000. Phase Two data collection will
provide long-term measurement over time of the effects of service
on participants who serve in two AmeriCorps programs: State and
National and the National Civilian Community Corps. Comparison
groups will be used to assess life changes for similar persons
without intense national service experience, and will allow a
