Terms of Clearance: Approved consistent with clarifications in SAMHSA memos of 9-27- 00 and 10-2-00. As per latter memo SAMHSA will evaluate the potential for consolidation of this collection with the Survey on Mental Health Organizations and and General Hospital Mental Health Services (OMB # 0930-0119). When submitting this latter collection SAMHSA should request an expiration date of 10-2003 so that both collections can be reviewed simultaneously.

Abstract: The Annual Census is a voluntary data collection that provides States and others with statistics on the changes in the utilization of State and county mental hospitals by age/gender/ diagnosis. These data measure service utilization and deinstitutionalization trends in the United States and in each State. Effective with the 2000 Census, information will be collected on the race/ethnicity of additions and resident patients according to diagnostic grouping.
