This collection request is approved for one year & a one-time use conditional upon the following terms of clearance. (1) NSF will fundamentally rethink the design and methodology of this study to ensure the practical utility of its results. This must include methods to substantially increase response rates (2) NSF will conduct a thorough analysis on non-response bias for this year's study and report the results to OMB prior to submitting future versions of this study for approval (3) In order to increase the response rates for this year's study, NSF will double the number of attempts to contact potential respondents by phone, and (4) Future versions of this study will fully comply with OMB's 1997 guidance on race and ethnicity. OMB will not approve this study at the next submission unless NSF substantially increases the response rates.

The proposed continuing information collection is a survey used to monitor public attitudes towards science and technology, including the public's understanding of the policy preferences on selected issues. This telephone survey has been conducted approximately every two years for mor than 20 years, and the information collected with it appears in the congressionally mandated National Science Board biennial report, Science and Engineering Indicators, and other publications.
