Section 4001 of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 amended the Social Security Act to ass section 1852, including 1852(g)(1)(B) which requires M+C organizations to provide determinations to deny coverage (i.e., medical service or payment) in writing and include a statement in understandable language of the reasons for the denial and a description of the reconsideration and appeals processes.
