Under authority of the Marine Mammal
Protection Act, the Service in 1988 added paragraph (f) to its
regulations at 50 CFR 18.23 to gather data on the Alaska Native
subsistence hunt of polar bear, northern sea otter, and Pacific
walrus to determine what effect the harvest is having on these
populations. This data also increases the Service's ability to
manage these marine mammals.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
