Upon the next
submission of this package, CDC will update OMB on the status of
the implementation of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance
System (NEDSS) scheduled to take full effect in 20 states by
December of 2002. CDC will provide OMB with a timeline for the
phasing out of the National Electronic Telecommunications System
for Surveillance (NETSS) and a target date by which NEDSS will be
in use for all respondents.

CDC is reponsible for the collection
and dissemination of nationally notifiable diseases information and
for monitoring and reporting the impact of epidemic influenza on
mortality. This is a request for a three-year extension of the OMB
clearance for the collection of weekly and annual morbidity reports
from 57 respondents (i.e., 50 state, 2 city, and 5 territorial
health departments) and mortality reports from 122 U.S. cities and
metropolitan areas. The timeliness of the provisional weekly
reports provides information which CDC and state or local
