Approved with changes, consistent with changes agreed to in OMB passback memo and responses (8/5/02). Upon completion of the National Academies of Sciences study, ED will submit the reported NAS recommendations to OMB. Upon resubmission, ED will document what revisions were made to this survey and note whether and why any of the NAS recommendations were not incorporated into the survey. ED will further explore the option of including International Bacalaureate and/or other alternatives to capture the types of advanced, college level courses a school provides. ED will furnish a copy of the revised form no later than September 30, 2002.

The Elementary and Secondary School Survey ("E&S Survey") is a biennial survey which collects data from school and school districts on issues of interest to the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education. The E&S Survey is the instrument used by OCR to obtain trend data regarding the nation's public elementary and secondary schools. Data from the Survey is used by social scientists conducting research on discrimination, and by civil rights and other groups monitoring issues related to their programs.
