The National Child Abuse and Neglect
Data System, which has been collecting data for the Children's
Bureau since 1991, is being updated in order to increase its
compatability with the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and
Reporting System (AFCARS), which is used to collect data from
States on foster care. NCANDS meets the requirements of the Child
Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act [42 U.S.C. 5101 et seq.] as
amended, which requires that States that receive the CAPTA State
Child Abuse and Neglect Grant "to annually work with the Secretary
to provide, to the maximum extent practicable, a report"
