This survey uses a double sampling design to describe visitors to and to develop estimates of the number of recreation visits to federal lands, primarily to National Forests and Grasslands. The primary purpose is to estimate National Forest Visits with a known level of statistical accuracy and in a consistent method for each National Forest System unit in the US, in accordance with 1933 GPRA and Forest Service Manual requirements. To assist Forest staff in planning and management decisions, various characteristics about visitors are obtained. These characteristics include demographics, trip length, activity
