OMB approves this burden reduction due to the increase in the automatic payment of LPSD that precludes the necessity for the formal interview/application procedure.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) needs the information collected on Form SSA-8-F4 to authorize payment of the lump-sum death payment (LSDP) to a widow, widower, or children as defined in Section 202(i) of the Act. Respondents are applicants for LSDP.
The decrease in the burden is twofold: 1) more claimants are living longer, and 2) more individuals are dually entitled on the accounts of their spouses, and, therefore, the LSDPs are automatically paid when spouses benefits are converted to widowÂs/widowerÂs benefits. In this second situation, the LSDP is paid without an application.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that the collection of information encompassed by this request complies with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR 1320.8(b)(3).
The following is a summary of the topics, regarding the proposed collection of information, that the certification covers:
(i) Why the information is being collected;
(ii) Use of information;
(iii) Burden estimate;
(iv) Nature of response (voluntary, required for a benefit, or mandatory);
(v) Nature and extent of confidentiality; and
(vi) Need to display currently valid OMB control number;
If you are unable to certify compliance with any of these provisions, identify the item by leaving the box unchecked and explain the reason in the Supporting Statement.
