HINTS Briefs Web Survey
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is developing a series of one-page briefs
summarizing findings from a national health information survey called the Health
Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). The briefs will report findings from a
number of topics related to Health Communications, Cancer Knowledge and Screening, and Primary Cancer Risk Behaviors.
Since the HINTS questionnaire covers many topics, NCI would like to hear from you about your primary areas of interest.
Please take a few minutes to fill out this brief survey, which should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary.
Your responses will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to anyone except the researchers conducting the
survey, except as otherwise required by law.
Findings will be provided to the NCI in aggregate form only, with any potentially identifying information removed.

Questions about this survey should be directed to Mary Schwarz at [email protected].

Section I. Data Topics
Questions in this section ask about the different topic areas of HINTS questions
that we can summarize into one-page briefs.
HINTS questions are organized under the three main topic areas below; each of which has several subtopics.

Exercise can undo most of the effects of smoking. Vitamins can undo most of the effects of
smoking. There's no risk of getting cancer if someone only smokes a few years. Whether a
person gets lung cancer depends more on genes than anything else.
What type of cigarette do you now smoke most often -- a regular, light, ultra light or
some other type? Is the main reason you now smoke this type of cigarette because it is
a way to reduce the health risks of smoking, to try to quit smoking, because of the taste,
or for some other reason?
If a new cigarette was advertised as less harmful than current cigarettes, how
interested would you be in trying it?
How likely do you think it is that the average {male/female} cigarette smoker will
develop lung cancer in the future?
How likely do you think it is that you will develop lung cancer in the future?
Would you say the average smoker has about the same lung cancer risk as a nonsmoker, a little higher lung cancer risk than a non-smoker, twice the non-smoker's risk,
