Studies in Neighborhood Dynamics and Situational Policing

West Virginia University is conducting a study of the relationship between neighborhood dynamics and community policing. For the next several days, sociologists and criminologists from this university will be in (name of city) to study these issues. They hope to identify latent neighborhood-level dynamics that operate to either support or inhibit policing efforts. The study is limited to these four neighborhoods: Neighborhood 1 (identify boundaries), Neighborhood 2 (identify boundaries), Neighborhood 3 (identify boundaries), & Neighborhood 4 (identify boundaries).

The attached survey is for police officers who have worked in or around any or all of these four neighborhoods during the past several years. This survey is voluntary. In order to retain anonymity and expedite your participation with us, we are providing a self-addressed, pre-paid postage envelope.

PLEASE NOTE:

The first page of the survey requests information about you and your views on policing in general. The remaining pages ask you about your views on the neighborhood dynamics in each of the above listed neighborhoods. If you want to provide any additional comments about the neighborhood dynamics in any or all of the four neighborhoods, please feel free to write them on the survey itself.

The entire survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Please complete the survey as soon as possible and return it within the next 3 days in the self-addressed, pre-paid postage envelope provided. Thank you for your participation.

**If you have any questions or would like a copy of the final report, please contact Dr. Jim Nolan at West Virginia University (304) 293-5801 ext. 3210 or [email protected].
