This is a two-pronged study consisting of a national survey and field research. The population of interest is low-cost, outdoor arts fairs and festivals across the United States. The purpose of the study is to systematically describe the range and impact of arts festivals in the country. The national survey will be conducted electronically with telephone follow-up, and the field research consists of focus groups of artists and volunteers, written surveys of audience members, and interviews with festival administrators.
