The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program is intended to increase significantly the number of students receiving doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines, with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields. In addition, since lack of role models and mentors in the professoriate constitutes a significant barrier to producing minority STEM graduates, NSF is particularly interested in increasing the number of minorities who will enter the professoriate in these disciplines. A short term study to evaluate program impact and collect evidence of AGEP project success in meeting programmatic goals was first funded in 2008 and is currently underway. This data collection is part of this national evaluation and is designed to assess the impact of AGEP on current graduate students and to gather faculty perceptions of AGEP’s impact on their campuses and on students. The data collection will involve a survey of the universe of current AGEP graduate students (see Appendix A), and the universe of faculty members in STEM disciplines at the AGEP funded institutions.
