This collection
was erroneously submitted as a "Reinstatement with change,"
however, the change in burden was related to fluctuation in
respondents (and not a change to any fundamental changes to the
collection.) MARAD should carefully review this and other future
collections to ensure they are classified properly. According to
the MARAD program office, information was not collected during the
time that this collection was inactive.

The Maritime Administration is
required to review requests for medals and awards from merchant
mariners for the periods of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Operations
Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi
Freedom.
PL:
Pub.L. 100 - 324 2 Name of Law: The Merchant Marine Decorations
and Medals Act
This information collection has
decreased as last reported in 2007. The number of World War II
merchant marine veterans are rapidly declining. However, there are
many family members who contact the Maritime Administration (MARAD)
while doing genealogy research on their relatives. With various web
sites available, the public has been able to retrieve information
directly without contacting MARAD.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
The following is a summary of the topics, regarding
the proposed collection of information, that the certification
covers:
(i) Why the information is being collected;
(ii) Use of information;
(iii) Burden estimate;
(iv) Nature of response (voluntary, required for a
benefit, or mandatory);
(v) Nature and extent of confidentiality; and
(vi) Need to display currently valid OMB control
number;
If you are unable to certify compliance with any of
these provisions, identify the item by leaving the box unchecked
and explain the reason in the Supporting Statement.
