Voluntary collection of malformations observation data through NARCAM provides the research community with a national dataset on malformation occurrences, preventing potential duplication of research effort, as well as offering an "early warning system" to potential hotspots. The Center collates and compiles reported observations and their rates of occurrence for use by agencies and scientists seeking understanding of the phenomenon.
