The High School Longitudinal Study of
2009 (HSLS:09) is a nationally representative, longitudinal study
of more than 20,000 ninth graders in 944 schools, who will be
followed through their secondary and postsecondary years. The study
focuses on understanding students trajectories from the beginning
of high school into university or the workforce and beyond and will
provide data on how students navigate the transition between high
school and the postsecondary world; and what courses, majors, first
job, and careers students decide to pursue when, why, and how,
especially, but not solely, in regards to science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) courses, majors, and careers. This
study includes a new student assessment in algebraic skills,
reasoning, and problem solving and surveys students, their parents,
teachers, school administrators, and school counselors. This
submission is a request for clearance for a 2011 field test and a
60-day Federal Register notice waver for the 2012 full scale
HSLS:09 First Follow-up data collection.
The decrease in the burden for
this collection is due to the fact that the last OMB approval
included the base year main study data collection, while this
request instead includes data collection for the HSLS:09 first
follow-up field test. (Note: the increase in the IC burden is due
to consolidated several instruments in one IC; the burden overall
is a decrease as described in the above paragraph).
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
The following is a summary of the topics, regarding
