Subject: NIH’s Enhancing Peer Review Initiative Applicant Survey

Dear NIH Grant Applicant:

In 2008, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) embarked on a program to enhance the peer review system (http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/). The objectives of the Enhancing Peer Review Initiative are to ensure NIH continues to “fund the best science, by the best scientists, with the least amount of administrative burden.” A system of Continuous Review of Peer Review was incorporated into the program to elicit the opinions of NIH grant applicants, peer reviewers, Advisory Council members and NIH staff about the changes that were made.

NIH is now conducting the second “point-in-time” survey to gather opinions about the Enhancing Peer Review Initiative. You have been randomly selected to participate in this survey for NIH grant applicants. I hope that you will take this opportunity to provide your feedback on the NIH peer review process.

The survey is anonymous and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. There are no right or wrong answers and you may skip any questions that you do not wish to answer. Your participation is entirely voluntary.

RTI International, an independent, not-for-profit research firm based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is carrying out this study in collaboration with the NIH. In just a few days, you will receive an e-mail invitation with a hyperlink to the survey website.

Your opinions are very important to the survey’s success. Thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions regarding this project, please feel free to call Casey Tischner of RTI toll free at 1-800-334-8571 ext. 25888.

Sincerely,
