First Questionnaire Mailing Cover Letter to Title 13 NSCG Decennial-based Sample

I am writing to request your participation in the 2008 National Survey of College Graduates. We
appreciate your response to the 2006 study and are asking for your assistance again. Your
answers were extremely valuable in studying how the relationship between education and career
opportunity change over time. In addition to researchers and policymakers, students making
decisions about their own education and career choices consult this valuable information, as do
individuals thinking about changing careers.
Now we are asking you to help update this important information on our country’s highly
educated population. The U.S. Census Bureau is once again conducting this study for the
National Science Foundation (NSF), an agency of the federal government mandated by Congress
to study the education of the American people. The Census Bureau’s authority to collect this
information is Title 13, United States Code, Section 8.
The results from earlier studies are available at the NSF’s Web site at http://sestat.nsf.gov. Your
response is needed whether you are currently working or not. Because you were specifically
selected, we cannot substitute another college graduate for you, so the success of this study rests
upon your participation.
Please fill out the survey and return it in the enclosed postage-paid envelope within two
weeks. All information you provide is strictly confidential. If you have any questions about the
survey, please call my staff between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST on our toll-free number at
1-888-262-5935 or send an e-mail message to [email protected].
Thank you for your continued participation. Your information will help us assist everyone.
Sincerely,

Steve H. Murdock
Director
U.S. Census Bureau

The U.S. government’s funding of research and education influences the employment and
advancement opportunities of the people of the United States.
About five weeks ago we asked you to participate in a study that helps the U.S. government
decide how to invest in research and education. To date, we have not received your response.
Your response is important to this study, even if you are retired, do not work, or work in a field
that differs from that of your education or training. In case you did not receive the mailing or
have misplaced it, we have enclosed a replacement.
Please fill out the questionnaire and return it in the enclosed postage-paid envelope within two
weeks. Your mail response would help save the government cost of further follow-up by
telephone. All information you provide is strictly confidential and protected by U.S. law, which
imposes severe criminal sanctions if any U.S. Census Bureau employee violates these provisions.
If you have any questions about the 2008 National Survey of College Graduates, please call us
between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST on our toll-free number at 1-888-262-5935 or send an e-mail
message to [email protected].
Thank you for filling out this important survey.
Sincerely,

Steve H. Murdock
Director
