DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES OF SURVEY

NRC is considering development of a strategic vision to better incorporate risk management concepts into its
regulatory programs. To continue NRC's longstanding goal to move toward more risk-informed,
performance-based approaches in its regulatory programs, Chairman Jaczko has chartered a task force headed
by Commission Apostolakis to develop a strategic vision and options for adopting a more comprehensive and
holistic risk-informed, performance-based regulatory approach that would continue to ensure the safe and secure
use of nuclear material. As part of this initiative, the bask force is seeking comments from external stakeholders
on a series of questions (8) that will provide input for the task force to consider in its work.
The solicitation will be announced to stakeholders through the Federal Register. The solicitation questions are
simple and user friendly, asking only important questions using concepts and materials that have been discussed
in the Federal Register Notice itself or the included references. The estimated burden is 60 hours for
approximately 30 responses with an estimated burden per response of 2 hours. The solicitation will last for
approximately 45 days. The participants will be able to submit comments via mail or internet at
http://www.regulations.gov for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the closing of the solicitation.
The solicitation is expected to start on or about October 11, 2011, with an expected completion date on or about
November 30, 2011.
