Abstract: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Red Cross (ARC) have been collaborating on an evaluation of the long-term public health benefit of ARC water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) programs. Based on past work, ARC and CDC are in a unique position to identify specific factors that contribute to sustainability. This continued sustainability work will collect information on WASH programs over time. This data collection will be at the 10-year mark after completion of the ARC interventions in 2002. These results can benefit and inform other Red Cross (RC) WASH projects in the Americas region so that successful models and practices become part of the normal RC programming. The results from this project and the benefits of this collaboration will develop CDC and ARC expertise in water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, continued evaluation and research, strengthening community outreach capacity, building local relationships, and establishing relationships with government and other service providers to follow-up on WASH programs. All these tasks will inform the development of policy and practice within the RC and the humanitarian sector in general.
