Recruitment for Law Enforcement Focus Groups to Increase Seat Belt Use among Recently Arrived Hispanic Immigrants


Recruitment Process:

The National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI) or partner organization will visit police departments and law enforcement organizations that frequently work with the Hispanic population in the community. The NLCI or partner organization representative will explain that they are trying to increase traffic safety, especially seat belt use in the Hispanic community, and are interested in identifying ways to work with law enforcement to accomplish this objective.

The NLCI or partner organization representative will request participation from law enforcement representatives.


Composition of the group:

  • Law enforcement working with recently arrived immigrants

  • Law enforcement working with acculturated participants


For each site, attempt to recruit 12 participants who work with the Hispanic community, including recently arrived immigrants, anticipating that 6 will attend. Attempt to recruit law enforcement officers from the following, as appropriate:

  • City Police

  • County Sheriff’s Offices

  • Highway Patrol

  • Traffic Safety

  • Community Peace Officers



Recruiter will read and explain:

This collection of information is VOLUNTARY and will be used to recruit individuals to participate in a focus group meeting. Public reporting burden for this survey is estimated to average 10 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. We will not collect any personal information that would allow anyone to identify you. Please note that a federal agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, nor shall a person be subject to a penalty for failure to comply with a collection of information subject to the requirements of the Paperwork Reduction Act unless that collection of information displays a currently valid OMB control number. The OMB control number for this collection is 2127-0682. This focus group is being conducted to collect information that will help us better understand your opinions about seat belt use among individuals who are newly arrived to the United States and the best messages and materials to reach them about the importance of seat belt use. This collection of information is VOLUNTARY and will be used for formative purposes only so that we may develop materials to increase seat belt use among recent Hispanic immigrants. We will not collect any personal information that would allow anyone to identify you.
