The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has
enforcement responsibilities under several civil rights laws,
including Title VI, Title IX, Section 504, the Age Discrimination
Act, and the Boy Scouts of America Equal Access Act. To meet these
responsibilities, OCR collects assurances of compliance from
applicants for Federal financial assistance from, and applicants
for funds made available through, the Department of Education, as
required by regulations. These entities include, for example, State
educational agencies, local education agencies, and postsecondary
educational institutions. If a recipient violates one or more of
these civil rights laws, OCR and the Department of Justice can used
the signed assurances of compliance in an enforcement
proceeding.
