An Exposure Investigations (EI) is an approach developed by ATSDR that employs targeted biologic and environmental sampling to determine whether people may have been exposed to environmental contaminants at concentrations that may result in adverse effects. The EI evaluates potential exposure to contaminants where people reside, work or recreate. After a chemical release or suspected release, ATSDR's E's are used by public health professionals, environmental risk managers, and other decision-makers to determine if current conditions warrant intervention strategies to minimize or eliminate human exposure. EIs are usually requested by the officials of a state health agency, county health department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the general public, or ATSDR staff.
