The National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center have been updating their products and services, and provides a list of products and services to be updated for the upcoming storm season. The Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act of 2017 (Public Law No: 115-25 (4/18/2017) requires the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve weather data, modeling, computing, forecasts, and warnings for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy (Sec. 101). Specifically, Sec. 104 requires NOAA and the NWS to plan and maintain a project to improve hurricane forecasting, including, (1) the prediction of rapid intensification and track of hurricanes, (2) the forecast and communication of storm surges from hurricanes, and (3) risk communication research to create more effective watch and warning products.
This public survey on the general public’s interpretation and understanding of the new Arrival of Tropical Storm Force Winds graphic directly supports the NHC mission to “save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts and analyses of hazardous tropical weather, and by increasing understanding of these hazards.
Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average 10 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information.
