Under USC 26 5842 ATF requires each
licensed firearms manufacturer or licensed firearm importer to
legibly identify each firearm by engraving, casting, stamping
(impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing on the frame or
receiver an individual serial number. This number is used to
facilitate the investigations of the criminal use of
firearms.
