fresh
papaya
utilization for 2011 is
estimated at 28.6 million
pounds, down 5 percent
from 2010. Fresh utilization
accounted for 97 percent of
the total or 27.7 million
pounds, 5 percent below a
year ago. Acreage in crop
decreased 75 acres to 2,000
and harvested acreage
dropped 50 acres to 1,300.
The papaya value declined
13 percent to $9.7 million
mainly due to lower prices
and limited sales.
Weather for 2011 was
generally dry with some
areas of the State under
drought conditions. However, most of the crop was
grown on the eastside of
Hawaii
County,
where
favorable weather conditions prevailed. Some

periodic heavy rain fell causing disease outbreaks
and affecting fruit quality. Growers were still
having concerns with pest and disease problems,
low prices, vandalism, and high cost of inputs.
Lower prices have been a deciding factor for some
growers to discontinue papaya production. On the
brighter side and after a decade of waiting for
clearance, commercial shipments of genetically
modified papayas from Hawaii have been
approved for export to Japan, providing additional
marketing opportunity for growers. ■
