OMB appreciates
NASS’s commitment to taking advantage of new data sources and
cutting edge technology, such as satellite, web scraped, and sensor
data, to create efficiencies, reduce burden, and expand the scope
and utility of its existing collections. Within one year of
clearance, NASS agrees to provide OMB with a report that describes
the current efforts and strategic plan for harnessing alternate
data sources, including a discussion of potential opportunities for
the 2022 Census of Agriculture.

The census of agriculture conducted
every 5 years is the only source of consistent, comparable
agricultural data at the county, state, and national levels. It
collects important information on the number and size of farms,
land use, production expenses, value of production, land values,
and crop and livestock production, as well as key demographic data
on farm operators not available from any other source. These data
are critical to the agricultural community, including local, state
and federal governments, farmer organizations, marketing
associations, cooperatives, agricultural experiment stations,
universities, and others.
