CDC I-Catalyst Project – I-Catalyst Program Project IIU Design Sprint Interview Protocol Guide and Questions

Background Information:

Due to various policy, technology, and security constraints, it’s very challenging to experiment with new technologies on the CDC network. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Informatics Innovation Unit (IU) in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS), advances the field of public health informatics through applied research and innovation. IIU studies, prototypes, and tests new and innovative technology-based tools and resources to maximize their effect on public health. Using technology to solve public health problems isn’t new. The challenge is to develop technology solutions that truly meet the needs of end users. Fortunately, new methodologies are now being embraced and leveraged to help achieve this goal. Specifically, the IIU team will explore using a design sprint framework and integrating it into its software development process to increase the likelihood of building a useful and needed technology solution.

Interviewer to Respondent: Hi, my name is ...Thank you for your time. I know you are busy, I only need about 30 minutes of your time. I’m from CDC’s Informatics Innovation Unit (IIU) in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) working on a project involving CDC informatics and technology activities, , and want to ask some questions to learn more about your public health research and informatics and technology needs and challenges. Thank you for participating in this data collection effort. We will use the opinions and impressions you provide only for analyzing the general trends and directions of strategic planning, implementation, collaboration and partnership development within your respective region and across regions. You will not be identified in any published reporting. Individual respondents will not be identified in study reports except with their express permission. 1. Can you please tell us about the types of IT products you want to create or have created?

  2. Why did you want to create the product?

  3. What problems does the product solve?

  4. Tell me about your process. How did you decide this product was needed?

  5. What was easy about the process? What was hard? What would have made it easier?

  6. Can you please tell us about your information technology-related research and development needs?

  7. How do you identify what hardware and software resources are needed for your work?

  8. What software applications for mobile devices and the Web do you use?

  9. Who are the end users of your product?

Thank you for your time.
