OSM and state regulatory authorities use the information collected for 30 CFR part 772 to keep track of coal exploration activities, evaluate the need for an exploration permit, and ensure that exploration activities comply with the environmental protection and reclamation requirements of 30 CFR Part 772 and section 512 of SMCRA (30 USC 1262).

The currently approved information collection burden for 30 CFR 772 is 7,644 hours. We are now requesting 1,864 hours, an adjustment of 5,780 hours due to a reduction in use. OSMRE is also seeking approval of $288 in non-wage costs, a reduction of $2,120 due to a reduction in use.
