Survey Instrument


Introduction


NWS is exploring potential changes and improvements to the way it displays and communicates frost and freeze events. Currently, NWS issues five products to alert the public and partners on these hazards: Frost Advisory, Freeze Watch, Freeze Warning, Hard Freeze Watch, Hard Freeze Warning. The following survey is meant to gather preliminary information on public and partners use of and needs for frost and freeze information.

Before we begin the survey, we'd like to ask you a few questions about yourself. These answers will help us ensure that we capture the perspectives of a broad range of people from different backgrounds. If you feel uncomfortable answering any particular question, you may skip it.

For the next section, we would like to get a better sense of how you use the NWS Watch, Warning, and Advisory frost/freeze products. See below for descriptions of these products.





Descriptions:

Frost Advisory: Minimum shelter temperatures forecast to be 33°F to 36°F during the locally defined growing season, on nights with good radiational cooling conditions (e.g., light winds and clear skies).

Freeze Watch: Conditions are favorable for a freeze event to meet or exceed Freeze Warning criteria in next 12 to 48 hours during the locally defined growing season.

Freeze Warning: Minimum shelter temperature is forecast to be 32°F or less during the locally defined growing season.

Hard Freeze Watch: Conditions are favorable for a freeze event to meet or exceed Hard Freeze Warning criteria in the next 12 to 48 hours during the locally defined growing season.

Hard Freeze Warning: Minimum shelter temperature is forecast to be 28°F or less (slightly lower or higher based on local criteria) during the locally defined growing season.

Freeze Warning

...FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 AM CDT /1 AM MDT/ TO

9 AM CDT /8 AM MDT/ WEDNESDAY...


* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 expected.


* WHERE...Portions of north central, northwest, south central,

southeast, and southwest North Dakota.


* WHEN...From 2 AM CDT /1 AM MDT/ to 9 AM CDT /8 AM MDT/

Wednesday.


* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops and other

sensitive vegetation, and possibly damage unprotected outdoor

plumbing.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...


Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent

freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they

should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that

have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover

above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.


Hard Freeze Watch

...HARD FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY EVENING THROUGH

FRIDAY MORNING...


* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures between 15 and 28 degrees.


* WHERE...Much of eastern New Mexico as well as the northwest

Plateau, Lower Chama River Valley and the Santa Fe Metro area.


* WHEN...From Thursday evening through Friday morning.


* IMPACTS...Freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive

vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.


* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Ensure pets have warm shelter and unfrozen

water. If you have not already done so, drain water from

irrigation and swamp cooler lines.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...


Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other

sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor

plumbing.


* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Ensure pets have warm shelter and unfrozen

water. If you have not already done so, drain water from
