BJS is granted a
one-year clearance to collect data for reference year 2019. During
this clearance period, BJS must evaluate external sources of
information on prisoners under sentence of death. Should BJS decide
to continue collection of this data beyond reference year 2019, the
next clearance package must describe the efforts that will be made
to ensure that this collection continues to provide value to the
public by providing more timely, accurate, and complete information
than other sources.

This series analyzes capital statutes
and data on persons under sentence of death in State and Federal
correctional facilities. Information acquired from this program
provides historical trends and will be used as a source of
comparative data by BJS, Congress, journalists, researchers, and
other interested parties.
Fluctuations in the flow and
the population of inmates under sentence of death from one year to
the next result in corresponding changes in the annual burden
count.
