T ITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Tax Record for Account


PURPOSE: The main goal for this research initiative is to determine which specific pieces of tax records / transcripts / information are the most valuable to taxpayers, and produce a statistically valid analysis of the reasons why taxpayers, tax professionals, and businesses need tax records and transcripts.

This research is in support of new features (tax record data points) for the IRS online account application.

The study will be conducted in two parts. Part 1 will include moderated, qualitative research discussions with individual taxpayers, tax professionals, and representatives from businesses that may ask taxpayers to provide tax record information. Part 2 will incorporate an unmoderated, online survey with different participants of the same demographic profiles. Participation in both parts is voluntary and anonymous, and no personally identifiable information will be collected.


DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Individual taxpayers who have requested their tax records, tax professionals, and representatives from businesses that may ask taxpayers to provide tax record information.

We plan to use a variety of resources, including our respondent database, social media, and online community boards to recruit for this research. We will strive to include approximately one-third of all respondents in each of three target categories: individual taxpayers, tax professionals, and businesses with tax record requests.

TITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Provide the name of the collection that is the subject of the request. (e.g. Comment card for soliciting feedback on xxxx)


PURPOSE: Provide a brief description of the purpose of this collection and how it will be used. If this is part of a larger study or effort, please include this in your explanation.


DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Provide a brief description of the targeted group or groups for this collection of information. These groups must have experience with the program.


TYPE OF COLLECTION: Check one box. If you are requesting approval of other instruments under the generic, you must complete a form for each instrument.


CERTIFICATION: Please read the certification carefully. If you incorrectly certify, the collection will be returned as improperly submitted or it will be disapproved.


Personally Identifiable Information: Provide answers to the questions. Note: Agencies should only collect PII to the extent necessary, and they should only retain PII for the period of time that is necessary to achieve a specific objective.
