Description:
We will survey key stakeholders (environmental justice advocates, health officials, and subject matter experts on environmental
justice and health) to get feedback for improvement of materials associated with the Environmental Justice Index (EJI). Surveys will
be carried out under the #Generic Clearance for the Collection of Routine Customer Feedback# (OMB Control Number: 09230047), and will be conducted during online workshops that will be open to public registration and promoted through channels
selected to engage key stakeholders. Feedback provided through these in-workshop surveys will be used to improve functionality of
the EJI mapping interface as well as messaging around the calculation and use of the index. Long-term, these improvements will
make it easier for these stakeholders to use the EJI effectively in their work towards health equity.

Goals/Purpose
We will collect feedback from Environmental Justice Index (EJI) users and key stakeholders that will allow us to improve materials
associated with the EJI. The EJI has a broad potential user-base, spanning governmental, academic, and community spheres.
Surveying current and potential users of the EJI will help us to improve use and understanding of the EJI, facilitating its integration
into public health science and practice, and providing users with more of the tools they need to address health inequities associated
with environmental injustice.
Objective:
Our objective is to gather feedback on Environmental Justice Index (EJI) methods and materials through the use of online surveys.
This feedback will then be used to improve materials associated with the EJI. Survey results are not intended to be disseminated to
the public.

and data collection as a condition of any funding provided
Method Categories:
Survey
Methods:
Surveys will be conducted during informational workshops on the Environmental Justice Index (EJI) that will be hosted by CDC
/ATSDR and open to public registration. These workshops will be conducted via webinar, and will be promoted through a number of
channels designed to reach a target audience of environmental justice advocates, health officials, and subject matter experts on
environmental justice and health. These channels will include: 1) US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Climate
and Health Equity email listserv 2) US Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Justice email listserv 3) @CDCEnvironment
Twitter Account 4) Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Place and Health website (https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov
/placeandhealth/howdoesPlaceaffectHealth.html). During each workshop, attendees will have the option to join up to three
informational sessions. At the end of each session, attendees will be given the option to provide feedback on information conveyed
in that session by answering a short survey. Survey responses will then be synthesized by the program and used to improve
materials such as fact sheets, FAQs, technical documentation, and data dashboards.
Collection of Info, Data or Biospecimen:
Attendees of ten online, informational workshops on the Environmental Justice Index (EJI) will be given the option to voluntarily
participate in up to three short, 3-minute surveys. Surveys will be administered through Survey123, a secure, online data-collection
platform. Surveys include Likert scale and open-ended questions. Questions are designed to obtain feedback on which EJI
materials require improvement and how best to improve materials to make them easier and more helpful for users.
The Environmental Justice Index (EJI) is a tool that can be used to identify and prioritize areas that may require special attention or
additional action to improve health and health equity, educate and inform the public about their community, analyze the unique,
local factors driving cumulative impacts on health to inform policy and decision-making, and establish meaningful goals and
measure progress towards environmental justice and health equity. Survey responses regarding EJI materials will be synthesized
Expected Use of Findings/Results and their impact:
by the program and used to improve materials such as fact sheets, FAQs, technical documentation, and data dashboards
associated with the EJI. Improved materials and messaging will help in the adoption and appropriate use of the EJI by individuals,
community-based organizations, public health officials at local, state, and federal levels, scientists, and researchers. This will help
these users to make informed decisions on how to address environmental injustices and associated health inequities.
