This collection of information is mandatory, collected as needed, and is associated with FRA's rule 49 CFR part 225. It involves both reporting and recordkeeping requirements. FRA uses the information obtained through its accident/incident regulations to maintain a current and historical database so that it can monitor the safety and operational practices of the nation's railroads; to identify and promptly ameliorate hazardous conditions associated with rail transportation; and to assure compliance with Federal railroad safety laws. Additionally, the information collected enables FRA to promote and enhance railroad safety.

This is an extension without change (with changes in estimates) to a current collection of information. The current OMB inventory for this information collection shows a total burden of 35,846 hours and 89,057 responses, while the requesting inventory estimates a total burden of 30,284 hours and 88,176 responses. Overall, the burden for this submission has decreased by 5,562 hours, and the number of responses has decreased by 881. There is no change in the method of the collection. The decrease in burden is solely the result of adjustments in the estimates. Note: Due to an error in calculation, FRA has made corrections to the total number of responses and burden hours in the 60-day Notice, 88 FR 24657, published in the Federal Register on April 21, 2023, and the 30-day Notice, 88 FR 42999, published in the Federal Register on July 5, 2023. The total number of responses was updated from 85,570 to 88,176, and the total number of burden hours updated from 30,283 to 30,284 hours. The update to the burden is due to the automated rounding of burden hours in ROCIS.
