EquIP HQ Testing Plan:

Objective:

The purpose of this classroom observation session is to understand the chosen EquIP HQ activity’s ease of implementation in the classroom, students’ ability to use the materials, and whether the activities are grade-level appropriate.

Lesson Details: Total Time = 50 minutes

  1. Introduction (10 minutes with 5 minutes of question time)

  • Activity: Intro to invention

  • Description:

    1. Second Avenue to introduce themselves and thank the students for being testers.

    2. Ask students if they know what an inventor and invention is (group discussion)

    3. Second Avenue to provide an explanation with an example (computer, iPad, pencil, etc.).

  • Objective: To stimulate students’ curiosity about inventions and inventors.

  • Discussion: What is invention? What does it mean to be an inventor?


  1. Jennifer Wen Video (10 minutes with 5 minutes of question time)

  • Activity: Jennifer Wen video

  • Description:

    1. Second Avenue to set-up the Jennifer Wen video for grades 3-5 to watch as a class.

    2. Discuss her process and the incremental change she made to a bookmark.

  • Objective: Help students understand that everyone can be an inventor, even kids like them! Show students that invention does not have to be something big and revolutionary, but instead can be an incremental change to something that already exists.

  • Discussion: How did Jennifer Wen come up with the idea for her invention? What did she create that was new?


  1. Spot the Difference Activity (20 minutes)

  • Activity: Spot the Difference

  • Description:

    1. Have students play the Spot the Difference activity individually or in pairs.

    2. Observe students as they engage with the activity.

  • Objective: Test students’ ability to use the materials and whether the objective and language is grade-level appropriate.


  1. Wrap Up and Feedback (10 minutes of question time)

  • Activity: Reflection and Feedback

  • Description: Students will draw a quadrant on a piece of paper and answer four questions designed to elicit feedback on the Spot the Difference activity.

  • Quadrant Questions:

    1. What is one thing you liked about the activity?

    2. What is one thing you disliked about the activity?

    3. What is one thing you would change about the activity?

    4. Would you play this activity again? And why/why not?

  • Discussion: After students had a few minutes to write their responses, discuss as a class to be able to ask students follow-up questions about their responses (especially important for this age group).

  • Objective: To gather feedback from students on their experience.
