This request is for the addition of 47 new data elements: 45 new core data elements for all conditions, and 2 new disease-specific data elements. Names, descriptions, value set codes (the answer list for coded data elements from CDC vocabulary server (PHIN VADS) which can be accessed at http://phinvads.cdc.gov), and justification for the addition of these new data elements are below.
PHIN VADS is currently fully available and expected to be until the beginning of November 2026. By November 2nd, PHIN VADS users should begin using an alternative solution as CDC will sunset all PHIN systems by November 30, 2026. CDC will systematically migrate PHIN VADS content to other tools to maintain critical functionality, while continuing to explore enhancements beyond the initial transition. CDC will provide the PHIN user community with advance notice of key transition dates and any changes that affect tool availability through multiple forums, including updates on this website: https://wwwdev.cdc.gov/phin/php/sunset/index.html

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease)

The impetus/urgency for CDC to add data elements for this condition
    • Improve CDC’s understanding of zoonotic and environmental risk factors associated with Hansen’s disease in the United States, particularly exposure to armadillos and contaminated soil.
    • Better characterize the role of Mycobacterium leprae transmission from animal reservoirs to humans, including specific activities (e.g., hunting, butchering, consuming, soil contact) that may increase infection risk.

Core Data Elements

The impetus/urgency for CDC to add data elements for this condition
    • NNDSS is implementing new core messaging specifications for routine messaging and emergency responses.
    • These new core messaging specifications are meant to alleviate burden on jurisdictions who noted a previously high burden of work due to lack of harmonization of data requests across conditions.
    • The below data elements are all routinely asked about by CDC programs across conditions, and have been standardized and consolidated, so that fewer disease specific requests will be made of jurisdictions.
