THE PROJECT IS A PILOT STUDY OF LABORATORY-BASED RESEARCH ON THE COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF SURVEY METHODOLOGY. A SUPPLEMENT TO THE NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY (NHIS) WILL BE USED AS THE VEHICLE FOR TESTING THE APPLICABILITY OF COGNITIVE METHODS TO QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN. SEVER SERIOUS METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE NHIS WILL ALSO BE INVESTIGATED: TELESCOPING, CONFIDENTIALITY, AND CONDITIONING. THE RESULTS WILL BENEFIT THE NHIS AND OTHER FEDERAL SURVEYS.
