The report of death is prepared by a consular officer at a U.S. foreign service post. It contains data about the death of an American citizen, disposition of the remains, custody of the effects, etc., all of which are useful to the next of kin in taking care of the decedent's legal affairs. The CFR requires prepration of the OF-180 when reporting the death of a U.S. citizen who dies abroad.
