The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a regulation requiring manufacturers to install advanced air bags that reduce the likelihood of injury or fatality in a crash. A two-stage phase-in of mandatory advanced air bags was implemented. Each phase covers a three year period. Phase 1 begins September 1, 2003, and Phase 2 begins September 1, 2007.
