The regulation at 7 CFR 318 13-4f
currently approves irradiation as a method of treatment for certain
Hawaiian fruits and vegetables. Shippers in Hawaii have not been
able to ship mangos to the US Mainland because there hasn't been
any approving treatment for the Mango Seed Weevil, which is known
to occur in Hawaii. This action will allow irradiation as a
phytosanitary treatment to control Mango Seed Weevil. Based on an
evaluation of new research, APHIS is recommending the treatment
dose of 100 Gray to treat mangos.
