This collection is approved under the following terms of clearance: Results of the field test, described on page 17, shall be provided to OMB along with any changes to survey design, operation, or data collection. Approval is granted to used a combined race/ethnicity format because these are administrative data collected by observation, not self-report. If DOJ shifts to permitting juveniles to self-report race and ethnicity, separate Hispanic and race questions shall be used and reflected in future collections. OMB will permit use of an "other-specify" race category in the data abstracted from admin. records. However, prior to any public release of data, these data shall be recoded to one of the categories as defined in 1997 OMB Standards for Data on Race and Ethnicity. Data published or disseminated shall NOT include an "other" category. OJJDP is encouraged to begin using a two or more races cateogry rather than "other."

The Juvenile Probation Census Project will collect information from juvenile probation supervision offices regarding the number and characteristice of juveniles on probation and the activities of juvenile probation offices nationwide. The project includes two forms: the Census of Juvenile Probation Supervision Offices and the Census of Juveniles on Probation. There is currently no effort to collect information about juveniles on probation although juvenile probation has been termed the "workhorse" of the juvenile justice system and handles large numbers of juveniles per year.
