Data Preservation Workshop

OMB Control No. 1090-0011

Expiration Date: 08/31/2018

The National Geological and Geophysical Program (NGGDPP) is conducting a survey of state geological surveys to assess interest in attending a data preservation workshop and needs for information about the preservation and management of geoscientific data and collections. Responses will be used to plan knowledge sharing sessions at the data preservation workshop. Your response is voluntary. We estimate it will take approximately 10 minutes to prepare and submit the response. In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act (44 USC 3501), an agency may not conduct or sponsor and a person is not required to respond to a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid Office of Management and Budget control number. OMB has reviewed and approved this information collection and assigned OMB Control Number 1090-0011. You may submit comments on any aspect of this information collection, including the accuracy of the estimated burden hours and suggestions to reduce this burden. Send your comments to: Information Collections Clearance Officer, U.S. Geological Survey, [email protected].

Workshop description:

The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) is planning a data management workshop to share information, provide training opportunities, and learn from successful efforts rescuing, preserving, and disseminating information about geoscientific data and artifacts to further earth science investigations. The workshop is tentatively scheduled for September 26-28, 2017. Invitation to the workshop is extended to state geological survey personnel, museums, and USGS and other federal agency representatives.

Survey questions:

1) If federal funds matching 50% of travel costs are provided, do you have interest in attending a data management workshop that will offer information sharing, training opportunities, and examples of successful data and collection management practices?

Yes ____ No ____

2) Which data preservation topics are of interest to your state (rank your selections, 1 to 13):

- digitizing, scanning, and preserving paper media, including optical character recognition (OCR)

- digitizing, scanning, and preserving images, including photographs and negatives

- updating digital data to newer formats

- unique identifier registry for physical samples (barcodes, International Geo Sample Number (IGSN))

- preservation and curation of physical samples

- preservation and curation of digital data (databases)

- digital cataloging, metadata, standards, and data delivery

- facility design, infrastructure, storage, location, and access

- safety, risk management, and continuing operations

- accessioning collections to other institutions

- data preservation planning

- Big Data (data mining, data integration) - how can preservation efforts further scientific research?

- other topics: free-form, allow user input

3) Do you have data preservation experiences that you would be willing to share? If so, on what topics?

free-form answer

4) Are you aware of data preservation activities of other state geological surveys that you believe would be instructive to your group? If so, where is this work being done?

free-form answer

 5) If you are interested in discussing the future of the NGGDPP and improvements the Program can make to coordinate data preservation across the states and USGS, please suggest topics of interest (e.g., funding facilities, coordinating centralized repositories, metadata standards, shared training opportunities).

free-form answer

6) Please identify other workshop topics or activities in which you are interested.
