Approved with
the understanding that, if FSIS learns that revisions to the
current Safe Handling Instructions (SHI) are warranted, the Agency
will develop alternative formats for a revised SHI based on
consumers’ requirements for potential revisions to the SHI as
identified in the initial focus groups). The Agency would then
conduct additional consumer research (e.g., focus groups or an
experimental study) to test the alternative versions and to
determine a format for the revised label that would be most
effective at encouraging consumers to follow recommended safe
handling practices for raw and partially cooked meat and poultry
products.

FSIS, in partnership with the Ad
Council, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Center for
Disease Control, has developed a national public service
advertising campaign to educate the public about the importance of
safe food handling and how to reduce the risks associated with
foodborne illness. The Ad Council and FSIS are seeking approval of
an information collection to help measure the impact of the
campaign. The collection will take the form of a survey among
members of the target audience, parents and guardians, age 20-45,
who are caregivers to children under the age of 12 and cook meals
at home at least four times per week. The survey will gauge
awareness of the advertising, attitudes regarding safe food
preparation, and self-reported prevention behaviors.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
The following is a summary of the topics, regarding
the proposed collection of information, that the certification
covers:

(iii) Burden estimate;
(iv) Nature of response (voluntary, required for a
benefit, or mandatory);
(v) Nature and extent of confidentiality; and
