The NEXT Generation Health Study (NEXT) is a seven-year longitudinal assessment of a representative sample of U.S. adolescents starting at grade 10. NEXT fills significant research gaps on adolescence as they transition into adulthood. There are no current longitudinal surveys of obesogenic behaviors, substance use, and risky driving and their determinants during this developmental period. The goals of NEXT include to: identify the trajectory of health behaviors; to identify genetic, personal, family, school, and social/environmental factors that promote positive health behaviors; identify transition points in health risk and risk behaviors; and examine the role of gene-environment interactions in health status. NEXT data has been utilized by NICHD, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the Maternal and Child Health Branch of the Health Resources and Services Administration to fulfill program requirements.
