Focus Groups for Moving the Needle: Advancing Girls in Engineering


For each focus group we will explore:

  • What do they do know about engineering?

  • Have they taken any engineering related courses in school? Are they taking advanced math and science courses? Do they like these courses? Do they see them as important to their future?

  • What kinds of projects do they do in science?

  • Have they participated in any after-school clubs or programs that focused on engineering or a STEM-related activity?

  • What activities do they do out of school? Museums? Girl Scouts? Clubs at school?

  • Do they plan on going to college? Why or why not?

  • Have they thought about a potential career? If yes, what are they leaning toward?

  • Who do they talk to when looking/thinking about a future career?

  • What’s important to them as they consider their future career?

  • Where do they go for information?

  • Have they thought about a job or their future?

  • Who do they look up to? What have they learned from them?

  • Where and how do they watch video media?

  • What captures their attention when they watch videos?
