A Nonsubstantive change is being submitted to change the name of the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program - state prison collection to "Mortality in Correctional Institutions (State Prisons)." No other changes are being made to this collection. The Deaths in Custody (DCRP) prison collection provides a unique opportunity to study inmate mortality in-depth because it collects individual-level data on deaths in state prison. With information collected from the DCRP, BJS can track changes in mortality rates of imprisoned persons and improve the public’s understanding about deaths of persons under the control of the correctional system by reporting on cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the death

The total respondent burden has decreased since the last OMB clearance was obtained for these activities. The reason for this decrease is that the arrest-related death collection and the jail collection will be seeking separate clearances.
