This information is used by the Coast Guard (CG) to ensure the safe handling of explosives and other hazardous materials around ports and aboard vessels. |

When must information be submitted to the Coast Guard? |
An applicant must submit information on form CG-4260 “Application and Permit to Handle Hazardous Materials” to the CG Captain of the Port (COTP) before a determination can be made about the precautions/carriage requirements to be used during shipment. |
How is the information submitted? |
By mail, fax or electronically submitted via e-mail to the COTP. |
What happens when complete information is received? |
The CG will review the information and determine if a hazardous material is eligible for shipment and any precautions/carriage requirements. The CG will advise the applicant in writing if the shipment is approved, approved with conditions, or explain the disapproval. |
