This is an annual sample survey that
provides national estimates on inmates in local adult correctional
facilities, which is used by Federal, State, and local correctional
administrators, legislators, and researchers. Collection from all
known facilities operated by tribal authorities or the Bureau of
Indian Affairs that gathers data on inmate counts, movements, and
facility operations and staff. In selected years, additional
information is collected on facility programs and services to
inmates, such as medical assessments and mental health screening
precedures.

Annual Survey of Jails (ASJ):
The change in burden is due to the inclusion of the 21 respondents
from California jail jurisdictions that are not part of the
original sample. Survey of Jails in Indian Country (SJIC): The
change in burden is due to the increase in the number of Indian
country jails and the exclusion of the CJ-5B Addendum that was
collected during the previous OMB approved cycle.
